Measure, manage and monitor your fitness data

In 1960, John F Kennedy said, 'The softening process of our civilization continues its persistent erosion'. Sixty year later you could well say, 'He ain't seen nuthin.'

Metabolic, musculo-skeletal and mental health are declining at an exponential rate.

A key driver of this decline is a lack of regular and systematic physical activity and it's three main components, aerobic fitness, strength and flexibility.

Until now, scientifically prescribing, measuring, managing and monitoring physical activity on a grand scale has been virtually non-existent. 'Fitness' is the word that dare not speak it's name, particularly in the medical realm.

Thanks to the digital revolution, the 'tools' have

arrived, in particular for aerobic fitness.

AEROBIC FITNESS

  Fitbit

I use and recommend Fitbit to gather personal health, fitness and wellbeing information. The Fitness Tracka takes the use of Fitbit data to a new level. The development of wearable heart rate recording technology - and other metabolic health parameters - by Fitbit (and a host of other wearables organizations) has driven fitness into the medical realm, previously dominated largely by the pathology industry.

  STEPS

Fitbit tracks steps. It's a useful piece of information to gather.

But, steps without heart rate is a poor man's way of gathering data about aerobic fitness.

A tradesman and even a barista may well get more than 7,000 steps a day just doing their job. If you sit down all day you'll need to get in some recreational walking.

FITBIT ACTIVE ZONE MINUTES - 'Fitbit zone points'

However, a scientific aerobic fitness prescription needs three elements, frequency (times a week), duration (length of each session) and intensity (the ‘dosage’ related against a percentage of estimated, age-related maximum heart rate.)

The Fitbit zone points system fits the bill.

Fitbit has two aerobic fitness zones

1 point per minute when the heart rate is (circa) above 65% of (estimated age-related maximum heart rate.

2 points per minute if it is over (circa) 75% of maximum heart rate.

This means that the Fitbit zone points system can be used to prescribe aerobic fitness activity based on the scientific formula that includes an ‘active dosage’ based on heart rate.

  ENERGY EXPENDITURE - calories burnt

The obesity epidemic is driven by too much high (energy) density food and two little high ()energy) density physical activity. To gather an idea of how this epidemic has crept up on society, compare a photo of people at Woodstock in 1969 and those at a MAGA rally 50 years later.

There is a competition between technology that's hell-bent on eliminating activity from our lives and the body's need for more activity. Technology is winning, hands down. In which case, if you're in a sedentary occupation you'll have to get your physical activity in your own time.

It's difficult to lose weight without a regular and systematic aerobic physical activity program. Fitbit tracks how much exercise you do and how much energy you are burning up each day. The more you exercise, the greater the burn. It's a simple as that.

Look after the activity and the calories will look after themselves.

STORING AND SYNCING DATA TO TRUSTED

THIRD PARTIES

The beauty of the Fitness Tracka concept is that, for the first time, (your) fitness data will be readily available for trusted third parties to view. Here's the data spreadsheet:

Here's the pathway from your Fitbit smart watch to the screen of trusted third parties.

If your doctor, fitness or allied health practitioner prescribes a certain number of steps, Fitbit zone points and calories to achieve most days, they will be able to login and view the results on their screen. It's the same way doctors can view pathology results. In fact here in Australia the system should be incorporated/linked into the Commonwealth Government's MyGov Health Record. (At the moment the rescord is a medical record, not a health record per se.)

If you achieve your prescription target(s), next time you go to see your doctor, fitness or allied health practitioner, you'll get the thumbs up, a round of applause, a pat on the head or ...!

  GOALS

From ancient times people have been aware of the importance of writing down goals.

So, if the Fitness Tracka system is going to work for you, first write down your health, fitness and wellbeing goals. Share them with a primary health care professional - doctor, fitness practitioner, dietician or counsellor - your spouse/partner or a few friends.

You'll soon see the difference between a sedentary lifestyle and an active lifestyle when you're getting 7,000 steps and 40 Fitbit zone points on most days.

  MOTIVATION - motive and action

On the question of 'motivation' - you don't motivate yourself to do something, you do something and then become motivated!

'Motivation' is a great word, coming from the combination of the words 'motive and action'. You need both.

Eminent exercise physiologist, Kenneth Cooper said, 'I can give you the program, but I can't to it for you.'

I can give you a few programs. Click on the images below:

In the meantime stay tuned, highly tuned, and remember, it's a big ask expecting to stay healthy without keeping yourself fit.
