Life comes in many forms and you'll need to work out for yourself exactly what you want: - what you want more of and what you want less of.

 

It is a big ask expecting to gain meaning and purpose for your life by having someone do something to you. Sooner or later I have to do something to yourself; that involves thinking, listening, introspection, meditation, reflection contemplation, reading, conversation, time, effort, money and action. It was Descartes who said, 'I think, therefore I am', but there's one more step involved. He might have added 'I do, therefore I am'.

 

Here are some of the things some people aspire to:

having a job they love doing so much they'd do it for nothing (and which they did so well they were paid handsomely.

having a partner they adore and who adores them

•

being fit and healthy. Why, as you get older would you let your health get worse?

You are going to have to work out your own pantheon for successful living. The quicker you can work it out is the best indicator of how smart you are.

Over the last couple of years I've been promoting Servan-Schreiber's book, Healing without Freud or Prozac. It's difficult to get, but this one has turned up in it's place.

 

His new book on the topic of depression is another thoughtful, well-researched down to earth, commonsense approach to what you can do to recognise and then treat the symptoms of depression.

 

Although written by a trick cyclist it's definitely not rocket science.

 

According to Servan-Schreiber, exercise, nutrition, the ability to get your autonomic nervous system ticking over nicely and cognitive therapy stand head and shoulders over medication up at the depression front line.

I picked this one up originally as a well thumbed second hand book, and couldn't put it down. Frank made a success of his life selling insurance. His aphorism; 'Show me a man who shows his plan 5 times a day and I'll show you a millionaire.'
